Wie schon im letzten Beitrag erwähnt, sind wir direkt nach dem Grenzübertritt in die Türkei über die Dardanellen nach Asien eingereist. Dabei führte uns unser Weg über eine sehr neue Brücke, die gefühlt noch in der letzten Bauphase steckte. Auf den Pylonen waren noch Baukräne in schwindelerregender Höhe in Betrieb.
As already mentioned in the last post, we entered Asia directly after crossing the border into Turkey via the Dardanelles. Thereby our way led us over a very new bridge, which felt still in the last construction phase. On the pylons were still construction cranes in dizzying height in operation.
Unsere erste Station in der Türkei war die Stadt „Tevfikiye“, bei der das sagenumwobene Troja sein soll. Ich denke alle kennen die Geschichte/Story über das Trojanische Pferd und wir wollten der Sache mal auf den Grund gehen ;). Durch die Funde bei den Ausgrabungen bei „Tevfikiye“ geht man heutzutage davon aus, dass es sich um Troja handelt. In einem sehr modernen Museum werden zahlreiche Ausgrabungsstücke ausgestellt und die Geschichte Trojas und der ganzen Gegend wird sehr detailreich und anschaulich dargestellt. Es lohnt sich!
Our first stop in Turkey was the city "Tevfikiye", where the legendary Troy should be. I think everyone knows the story about the Trojan horse and we wanted to get to the bottom of it ;). Due to the findings during the excavations at "Tevfikiye" it is assumed nowadays that it is Troy. In a very modern museum numerous excavation pieces are exhibited and the history of Troy and the whole area is presented very detailed and vividly. It is worth it!
Die erste Nacht in der Türkei haben wir in Cannakkale verbracht. Bei einem selbstgebrauten Bier unseres Hotelinhabers haben wir von unserem Hausherrn überraschenderweise erfahren, dass diese Stadt eine Partnerstadt von Osnabrück ist ;) Er hatte unsere Nummernschilder „OS-XX“ gesehen und uns daher darauf aufmerksam gemacht! Wer hätte das gedacht! Am nächsten Morgen haben wir auch gleich noch den „Osnabrück Parki“ in Cannakkale besichtigt. Der Park ist nett gelegen, aber leider ohne ersichtliches Namensschild. Ein wenig mehr Pflege würde unserem „Osnabrück Parki“ allerdings auch noch gut zu Gesicht stehen.
The first night in Turkey we spent in Cannakkale. Over a home-brewed beer from our hotel owner, we surprisingly learned from our host that this city is a twin city of Osnabrück ;) He had seen our license plates "OS-XX" and therefore made us aware of it! Who would have thought that! The next morning we also visited the "Osnabrück Parki" in Cannakkale. The park is nicely located, but unfortunately without an obvious name sign. A little bit more care of "our" "Osnabrück Parki" would also not harm.
Nach der Besichtigung ging es dann über ca. 670km direkt bis nach Ankara, der Hauptstadt der Türkei. Auf der Fahrt hatten wir (genau genommen Marc) leider auch den ersten platten Reifen. Den Schlauch konnten wir aber ohne größere Probleme selbst wechseln.
After the sightseeing of "our" park we drove about 670km directly to Ankara, the capital of Turkey. On the way, we (Marc to be exact) unfortunately also had the first flat tire. However, we were able to change the tube ourselves without any major problems.
In Ankara selbst haben wir in der iranischen Botschaft ohne Probleme unser Visum für den Iran erhalten. Weiter Programmpunkte waren anschließend die Burg von Ankara und das Atatürk Mausoleum. Speziell das Atatürk Mausoleum beeindruckt durch seine Weitläufigkeit und Größe.
In Ankara itself, we received our visa for Iran at the Iranian embassy without any problems. Further program points were then the castle of Ankara and the Atatürk Mausoleum. Especially the Atatürk Mausoleum impresses with its spaciousness and size.
Nachdem wir einen vollen Tag in der Hauptstadt verbracht haben, ging es auch schon wieder weiter. Nächster Stopp war die Stadt „Göreme“ in Kappadokien. Dieser touristische Ort ist bekannt durch die „Wohnungen“, welche in der Bronzezeit in die Felsen gehauen wurden und später den frühen Christen als Zufluchtsort dienten. Fast täglich steigen dort auch früh morgens bis zu 165 Heißluftballons auf. Dies ist ein unvergessliches Schauspiel, welches wir auch live erleben wollten. Ein Video dazu ist unter der Rubrik „Videos“ abgelegt. In der Nähe von Göreme, in der Stadt „Derinkuyu“, haben wir nachmittags noch eine unterirdische Stadt angesehen. Dort haben zum Schutz frühe Christen abermals eine ganze Stadt für bis zu 30.000 Menschen (laut Informationstafel) und bis zu 85 Meter tief in den Untergrund gehauen. Sehr imposant und beindruckend.
After spending a full day in the capital, we moved on. Next stop was the town of "Göreme" in Cappadocia. This tourist place is famous for the "housings", which were carved into the rocks in the Bronze Age and later served as a refuge for the early Christians. In addion, almost every day, up to 165 hot air balloons also rise there early in the morning. This is an unforgettable spectacle, which we also wanted to experience live. A video about that can be seen under our "videos" section. At the same day, near Göreme, in the city of "Derinkuyu", we visited an underground city in the afternoon. There, for protection, early Christians have once again digged a whole city for up to 30,000 people (according to the information board) and up to 85 meters deep into the underground. Very imposing and impressive.
Nach dieser ganzen Flut von Eindrücken ging es auch schon wieder weiter ins ca. knapp 900 km entfernte Georgien. Wir haben während diesen langen „Rittes“ einen Übernachtungsstopp in der Stadt Bayburt nach rund 660km eingelegt. Auf dem Weg dorthin ging es über Pässe bis zu einer Höhe von bis zu 2.290m. In Bayburt konnten wir noch eine alte Burg bzw. deren Burgmauern besichtigen. Auf dem Weg nach Georgien haben wir noch eine off-road Etappe in Richtung „Of“ bei Trapzon eingelegt. Diese Strecke hatte dann einiges an Aussichten und abwechslungsreichen off-road Passagen zu bieten.
After this whole flood of impressions we went on to Georgia, which is about 900 km away. During this long "ride" we made an overnight stop in the city of Bayburt after about 660km. On the way there we went over mountain passes up to an altitude of 2.290m. In Bayburt we could visit an old castle and its walls. And on the way to country "Georgia" we made an off-road stage in the direction of "Of" near the turkish city of Trapzon. This stretch had a lot of views and varied off-road passages to offer.
Am Schwarzem Meer entlang sind wir dann zum eigentlichen Grenzübergang nach Georgien. Der Grenzübergang nach Georgien verlief reibungslos. Amüsant war, dass der Zollbeamte auf georgischer Seite mir (Thilo) als erstes sein Telefon ohne weitere Erklärung in die Hand gedrückt hatte. Daher waren beide Gesprächsparteien am Anfang an wenig verwirrt. Aber nach kurzer Zeit stellte sich heraus, dass ich mit dem Neffen des Grenzbeamten gesprochen habe. Und dies im fließenden Deutsch. Nach unserer netten Plauderei ließ uns der gutgelaunte Grenzbeamte ohne weitere Kontrollen passieren…
Along the Black Sea we then went to the actual border crossing to Georgia. The border crossing to Georgia went smoothly. It was amusing that the customs officer on the Georgian side firtst of all had given me (Thilo) his phone without any further explanation. Therefore, both parties to the conversation on the mobile phones were a little confused at the beginning ;) But after a short time it turned out that I spoke with the nephew of the border official. And this in fluent German! After our nice chat, the good-humored border official let us pass without further checks...
Die erste Neuigkeit für uns in Georgien war, dass unsere vorinstallierten Navigationskarten im „Garmin Zumo XT“ dieses und wohl auch die kommenden Länder nicht mehr abdeckt. Zu der ersten nahegelegenen Stadt „Batumi“ hatten wir es jedenfalls auch ohne Navi geschafft ;).
The first news for us in Georgia was that our pre-installed navigation maps on the "Garmin Zumo XT" no longer cover this and probably the upcoming countries. However, to the first nearby city "Batumi" within Georgia we had made it in any case even without any navigation system ;).
