Nepal

Mit einem Zwischenstopp sind wir aus Varanasi (Indien) zum Grenzübergang nach Nepal gelangt. Der Grenzübergang selbst verlief reibungslos und so ging es noch am gleichen Tag rund 100km in das Landesinnere bis zur Stadt „Tansen“. Sofort nach dem Grenzübertritt viel uns auf, dass im nepalesischen Straßenverkehr um einiges weniger gehupt wird und das auch weniger Kühe auf den Straßen im Vergleich zu Indien unterwegs sind. Und zudem, dass die Straßenverhältnisse nach dem Grenzübertritt schlechter geworden sind und man wieder vermehrt auf Schlaglöcher zu achten hat…

With a stopover we arrived from Varanasi (India) to the border crossing to Nepal. The border crossing itself went smoothly and so we went on the same day about 100km inland to the city of "Tansen". Immediately after crossing the border, we noticed that in Nepalese road traffic there is much less honking and that there are also fewer cows on the roads compared to India. And in addition, that the road conditions after the border crossing have become worse and one has to pay attention again increasingly to potholes...

In Tansen selbst haben wir eine Nacht in einem netten Homestay verbracht und auch gleich die Freundlichkeit der Nepalesen kennengelernt. Vor der Abreise am nächsten Morgen gab es dann auch einen traditionellen Hut ;)

In Tansen itself, we spent one night in a nice homestay and also immediately got to know the friendliness of the Nepalese. Before leaving the next morning, we got a farewell gift in form of a traditional hat ;)

Unser erstes richtiges Ziel war die touristische Stadt „Pokhara“. Dort treffen sich viele Einheimische und ausländische Touristen, die auf Treckingtouren gehen, Rafting machen und/oder sonstige Outdooraktivitäten unternehmen wollen. Zudem liegt die Stadt noch an einem See und bietet einen herrlichen Ausblick auf das „Annapurna Gebirge“ im Himalaya.

Our first real destination was the tourist city "Pokhara". It is a well-known tourist destination for many locals and foreign tourists who want to go on trekking tours, rafting and/or other outdoor activities. In addition, the city is still located on a lake and offers a magnificent view of the "Annapurna Mountains" in the Himalayas.

Auch wir haben uns überlegt was wir unternehmen wollen. Marc ist auf einen 3 Tages Trek „Poon Hill Trek“ gegangen und hat zudem einen Ultralight-Trike Flug an der „Annapurna Gebirgskette“ entlang gemacht.

We also thought about what we want to do at this nice location. Marc went on a 3-day trek "Poon Hill Trek" and also made an ultralight trike flight along the Annapurna Mountain range.

Und ich (Thilo) habe ein wenig gechillt und mich im Paragliding probiert. Wird wohl nicht mein neues Hobby werden, da mir ähnlich, wie auf einem Boot, nach einer gewissen Dauer mulmig im Magen wurde ;)

And I (Thilo) have chilled a little and tried me in paragliding. I enjoyed it but it will probably not be my new hobby. I was, similar like on a boat, after a certain duration a bit queasy/seasick in the stomach ;)

Aber wir beide waren bestens zufrieden mit unseren Unternehmungen und unserer Zeit in Pokhara.

However, both of us were very satisfied with our activities and our time in Pokhara.

Auch haben wir mal wieder Pascal aus der Schweiz (zusammen durch Pakistan gereist usw.) getroffen, der nach einer 10-tägigen Rafting Tour zurück nach Pokhara kam ;)

Also, we met again Pascal from Switzerland (traveled together through Pakistan etc.), who came back to Pokhara after a 10-day rafting tour ;)

Von dort ging es weiter in den „Chitwan Nationalpark“. In diesem Nationalpark soll man Tiger, Nashörner, Elefanten, Krokodile usw. sehen können. Da wir noch keine Nashörner in freier Wildbahn auf unserer Reise gesehen hatten dachten wir uns, dass wir dort mal vorbeischauen sollten. Der Weg dorthin verlief weitestgehend auf wirklich mäßigen Straßenverhältnissen! Trotz alledem sind wir vor der Dämmerung noch in unserer Unterkunft in der Stadt „Sauraha“ angekommen. Da wir uns nur einen Tag für den Park Zeit gegeben haben, haben wir eine Jeep-Tagestour gebucht und konnten so tatsächlich eine paar Nashörner entdecken. Generell war es nicht der beste Zeitpunkt, um den Park zu besuchen, da nach dem Monsun alle Gräser sehr hoch sind und man die Tiere in dem Dickicht nur schwer ausmachen konnte. Unser Führer hatte aber sehr gute Augen und somit haben wir doch einiges von der dortigen Tierwelt sehen können. Aber dieses Mal, nicht wie in Indien, haben wir keinen Tiger ausfindig können… ;)

From there we went on to the "Chitwan National Park". In this national park you should be able to see tigers, rhinos, elephants, crocodiles, etc.. Since we had not yet seen rhinos in the wild on our trip, we thought we should stop by there. The way there was mostly on really moderate road conditions! Despite all this, we arrived at our accommodation in the town of "Sauraha" before dusk. Since we only gave ourselves one day for the park, we booked a jeep day tour and were actually able to spot a few rhinos. Generally, it was not the best time to visit the park because after the monsoon all the grasses are very high and it was hard to spot the animals in the thicket. But our guide had very good eyes and so we were able to see some of the wildlife there. But this time, not like in India, we have not seen any tiger... ;)

Vom „Chitwan-Nationalpark“ ging es direkt weiter zur Hauptstadt nach Kathmandu. Der Weg dorthin führte uns über ein mittleres Gebirge bis auf 2.488m Höhe mit mehrheitlich guter Straße und über eine wirklich sehr schöne kurvige Strecke. Belohnt wurden wir auch noch mit einem Ausblick auf den Mount Everest!! Sehr geil! Das war nach sehr langer Zeit endlich mal wieder eine gute und Abwechslungsreiche Motorradstrecke… es wurde nach Ladakh in Indien auch mal wieder Zeit!

From the "Chitwan National Park" we went directly to the capital of Nepal to Kathmandu. The way there led us over a medium mountain range up to 2,488m altitude with mostly good road and over a really very nice winding road. We were also rewarded with a view of Mount Everest!!! Very nice!!! That was after a very long time finally once again a good and varied motorcycle route... it was after Ladakh in India also time to have some good motorbiking ride once again!

In „Kathmandu“ selber war dann wieder ein wenig Sightseeing angesagt. Die Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt und die Nachbarstadt „Bhaktapur“ wurden daher besichtigt. Generell muss man sagen, dass hier im Nepal alles entspannter und ruhiger zugeht als in Indien und wir uns daher in „Kathmandu“ ganz wohl gefühlt haben. In unserem Hostel haben wir dann auch noch eine deutsche Motorradreisegruppe kennengelernt die gerade ihre geführte Tour beendet hatten und auch ein befreundetes Paar aus unserer Zeit in Pakistan ;)

In "Kathmandu" itself was then again, a little sightseeing announced. The sights of the city and the neighboring city "Bhaktapur" were therefore visited. In general, it must be said that here in Nepal everything is more relaxed and quieter than in India and we therefore felt quite comfortable in "Kathmandu". In our hostel we also met a German motorcycle tour group who had just finished their guided tour and also a befriendet couple from our time in Pakistan ;)

Auch wurden unserer Motorräder nach rund 25.000km Strecke zum Service gebracht. Eine neue Kette, Kettenritzel und mal wieder einen neuen Hinterreifen gab es für beide Motorräder auch noch dazu.

Also, our motorcycles were brought to the service after about 25,000km distance. A new chain, sprockets and once again a new rear tire were also added for both motorcycles.

Um dies alles zu organisieren, waren wir schon 2-3 Wochen im „WhatsApp“ Kontakt mit dem Marketing-Manager von Honda in Nepal. Ihn haben wir dann auch noch auf ein Kaffee und ein nettes Gespräch in einem Honda Showroom getroffen. Und haben sogar 1-2 Honda Werbegeschenke bekommen ;) Dieser Kontakt kam durch einen Honda Händler in Jaipur in Indien zustande, wo wir einen Ölwechsel gemacht hatten… ;) Hier in Nepal zählt unser Motorrad, die „Honda CRF300Rally“, übrigens zu den großen Motorrädern bzw. zu den „Luxusbikes“ und werden daher sehr hoch besteuert. So Kosten unserer Maschinen im Nepal durch Importzölle gut das 2,5-Fache wie bei uns in Deutschland… komplett verrückt! Erst recht, wenn man das niedrige Durchschnittseinkommen im Nepal berücksichtigt.

To organize all this, we were already 2-3 weeks in "WhatsApp" contact with the marketing manager of Honda in Nepal. We also met him for a coffee and a nice talk in a Honda showroom. And even got some marketing gifts ;) This contact came about through a Honda dealer in Jaipur in India, where we had done an oil change... ;) By the way, here in Nepal our motorcycle, the "Honda CRF300Rally", counts to the big motorcycles or to the "luxury bikes" and therefore are taxed very high. Thus, costs of our machines in Nepal, due to import duties, are about 2.5-fold as in Germany... completely crazy! Even more so when you consider the low average income in Nepal.

Des Weiteren musste der Transport unserer Motorräder nach Malaysia mit dem Transportflugzeug in Kathmandu organisiert werden. Leider gibt es momentan keinen Überlandweg nach Südostasien, um Thailand bzw. Laos zu erreichen. Die Militärjunta in Myanmar und die Covidsituation in China versperren die Wege. Daher müssen wir und die Motorräder nun den Luftweg nehmen.

Furthermore, the transport of our motorcycles to Malaysia had to be organized by a cargo plane in Kathmandu. Unfortunately, there is currently no overland route to Southeast Asia to reach Thailand or Laos. The military junta in Myanmar and the covid situation in China blocks the ways. Therefore, we and the motorcycles now have to take the air route.

Die Motorräder wurden in Holzboxen verpackt und werden mit einem Transportflugzeug nach „Kuala Lumpur“ in Malaysia geflogen.

The motorcycles were packed in wooden boxes and will be flown to "Kuala Lumpur" in Malaysia by a cargo plane.

Wir sind mit einem „normalen“ Personenverkehr Flugzeug nach „Malaysia“ eingereist.

Eigentlich wollten wir direkt nach Bangkok (Thailand) fliegen. Davon wurde uns aber abgeraten, da es wohl immer wieder größerer Schwierigkeiten mit dem Zoll/Bürokratie in Bangkok gibt. Wie das am Ende alles funktioniert hat und was Malaysia alles zu bieten hat, werden wir im nächsten Blogbeitrag berichten.

Actually, we wanted to fly directly to Bangkok (Thailand). But we were advised against it, because there are usually greater difficulties with customs / bureaucracy in Bangkok. How it all worked out in the end and what Malaysia has to offer, we will report in the next blog post.
