Die Grenzkontrolle auf der georgischen und armenischen Seite sind problemlos über die Bühne gegangen. Jedoch mussten wir zum ersten Mal auf der armenischen Seite unsere Motorräder separat deklarieren. Durch einen Schichtwechsel bei dem Zoll durften wir ein wenig warten. Nach Aussage anderer Wartenden, mussten diese sich schon über eine Stunde gedulden. So ein Schichtwechsel beim Zoll in Armenien scheint zu dauern ;)
The border control on the georgian and armenien sides went smoothly. However, we had to declare our motorcycles separately for the first time on the Armenian side. Due to a shift change at customs, we were allowed to wait a little. According to other guys in the waiting queue, they had to wait for more than one hour. Such a shift change at the customs in Armenia seems to last a while ;)
Die ersten Kilometer in Armenien ging dann durch eine interessante Schlucht, den „Debed Canyon“. Unser erster richtiger Stopp für uns war der „Sevansee“. Ein großer (doppelt so groß wie der Bodensee!) und hoch gelegener See auf ca. 1.900m Höhe. Direkt am See haben wir noch die alte Klosteranlage „Sewanawank“ besichtigt.
The first kilometers in Armenia went through an interesting canyon, the "Debed Canyon". Our first real stop for us was the "Lake Sevan". A big (twice as big as Lake Constance!) and high situated lake on about 1.900m altitude. Directly at the lake we visited the old monastery "Sewanawank".
Von dort ging es dann ohne Umwege zur Hauptstadt „Jerewan“. Dort sind wir im „One Day Hostel“ für 2 Nächte untergekommen. In Jerewan haben wir abends das Springbrunnenspektakel am Hauptplatz mit hunderten von Meschen für eine gewisse Zeit angesehen, bevor wir uns dem lebendigen Treiben in der Innenstadt zugewandt haben. Letztendlich sind wir dann in einer „craft-beer“ bar hängen geblieben. Dort haben wir mal wieder festgestellt, dass wir doch die Standardbiertrinker sind … Weizen, Lager und das dunkle Eigengebräu waren nach unserem Geschmack die Besten;)
From there we went without detours to the capital "Yerevan". There we stayed in the "One Day Hostel" for 2 nights. In Yerevan, we watched the fountain spectacle at the main square with hundreds of people for some time in the evening, before we turned to the lively hustle and bustle in the city center. Eventually we got stuck in a craft-beer bar. There we found out once again that we are the standard beer drinkers after all ... Weizen, Lager and the dark home brew were the best according to our taste ;)
Am nächsten Tag hat die fest eingeplante „free walking tour“ irgendwie nicht stattgefunden. Um 11Uhr war niemand an dem Treffpunkt anzutreffen. Daher haben wir die Sehenswürdigkeiten allein abgeklappert. Es gibt einige schöne Ecken zu erkunden! Bemerkenswert war vor allem das „Genozid-Museum“, welches auf einem Hügel bei der Stadt liegt. Die Monumente und das moderne Museum zeigen die Geschichte und letztendlich auch das Leid der Armenier unter der Osmanischen/Türkischen Herrschaft. Insbesondere die Zeit ab und nach dem ersten Weltkrieg wird sehr detailreich dargestellt. Dieses Thema ist noch immer ein offenes Buch zwischen Armenien und der Türkei, welches bis heute die jeweiligen Gemüter erhitzt.
The next day, the scheduled "free walking tour" somehow did not take place. At 11 o'clock no one was to be found at the meeting point. Therefore, we have organized the sight seeing tour on our own. There are some nice corners in the city to explore! Most notable was the "Genocide Museum", which is located on a hill near the city. The monuments and modern museum show the history and ultimately the suffering of Armenians under Ottoman/Turkish rule. Especially the time from and after the First World War is shown in great detail. This topic is still an open book between Armenia and Turkey, which until today heats up the respective minds.
Nach den ganzen Sehenswürdigkeiten, der Geschichte und der allgegenwärtigen Hitze, haben wir uns in einem Gallerie-Kaffee um die Ecke unserer Unterkunft gechillt und den Blog-Beitrag für Georgien fertiggestellt. „Jerewan“ als Stadt hat uns definitiv positiv überrascht! Der Stadtkern ist „moderner“ als erwartet!
After all the sightseeing, history and the omnipresent heat, we chilled out in a gallery coffee around the corner from our accommodation and finished the blog post for Georgia. "Yerevan" as a city definitely surprised us in a positive way! The city center is more "modern" than expected!
Am nächsten Tag ging es als erstes zur bestbewertetem Motorradwerkstatt „Motoshop Armenia“ in Jerewan. Marc´s Rücklichtbirne musste ausgetauscht werden. Da wir schon einmal dort waren, wurden auch gleich unsere Ketten der Motorrädern nach den ganzen off-road Etappen in Georgien mit viel Hingabe und Sorgfalt gereinigt und wieder gefettet.
The next day we went first to the best rated motorcycle repair shop "Motoshop Armenia" in Yerevan. Marc's taillight bulb needed to be replaced. Since we were already there, the chains of the motorcycles were also cleaned and greased again with much dedication and care after all the off-road stages in Georgia.
Nach ca. 1,5 Stunden bei der Werkstatt ging es weiter in eine nahegelegenen Klosteranlage „Kloster Geghard“ in der Nähe von Jerewan.
After about 1.5 hours at the workshop, we continued to a nearby monastery complex "Geghard Monastery".
Danach ging es fast ohne Umwege Richtung Süden des Landes Richtung iranischer Grenze. Da Armenien noch vor ca. 2 Jahren (Juli 2020) kriegerische Auseinandersetzungen mit Azerbaijan hatte und es ein schwelender Konflikt ist, haben wir es vermieden zu nahe an die Grenzregion zu kommen und daher einen kleinen Umweg am Savensee entlang Richtung Süden gemacht. Der Weg war überraschend interessant da es durch eine Schlucht und karger werdende Berglandschaften ging. Solch eine Landschaft hatten wir eigentlich erst im Iran erwartet.
After that we went almost without detours towards the south of the country in the direction of the Iranian border. Since Armenia had armed conflicts with Azerbaijan about 2 years ago (July 2020) and since it is an simmering conflict, we avoided coming too close to the border region and therefore made a small detour along Lake Savena towards the south. The way was surprisingly interesting as it went through a gorge and barren mountain landscapes. Such a landscape we had actually expected not prior to Iran.
Nach einem nächtlichen Stopp in „Sissian“, stand noch ein touristisches Highlight Armeniens auf dem Programm. Das Kloster „Tatev“. Dort besteht die Möglichkeit mit einer sehr langen Seilbahn (ca. 5,5km) auf das Plateau oder durch ein Tal mit einigen Serpentinen zum Kloster, zu fahren. Wir sind selbstredend mit unseren Motorrädern durch das Tal gefahren. Da wir zeitig vor Ort waren, konnten wir die eher kleine, aber interessante Anlage in Ruhe besichtigen und hatten noch eine schöne Draufsicht von der weiterführenden Straße gegenüber.
After a night stop in "Sissian", another tourist highlight of Armenia was on the program. The monastery "Tatev". There is the possibility to get to the monastery by a very long cable car (about 5.5 km) to the plateau or on a road through a valley with some serpentines to the monastery. Of course, we drove with our motorcycles through the valley. Since we were there early, we could visit the rather small, but interesting place in peace and still had a nice top view from the continuing road on the opposite side.
Das letzte Ziel vor dem Übertritt in den Iran war dann der Ort „Meghari“ nahe der Grenze. Dort haben wir noch den Restalkohol aus unseren Flachmännern verkostet und die letzten 1-2 Bier für die nächste Zeit genossen. Das Fassbier wird hier übrigens einfach im Kühlschrank gelagert und dann in 1 Liter Flaschen abgefüllt und verkauft :)
The last destination before crossing into Iran was then the place "Meghari" near the border to Iran. There we still tasted the residual alcohol from our hip flasks and enjoyed the last 1-2 beers for the upcoming weeks. By the way, a beer barrel here is simply stored in the refrigerator and then filled into one-liter bottles. Those filled up bottles are then sold :)
